Stock Brokerage vs. Crypto Account: Ownership, Fees & Transfers
What is the difference between a stock brokerage account and a crypto trading account? The assets, custody arrangements, costs and withdrawal rules can differ even when both appear in the same app.

Buying a crypto ETF is different from buying coins
A crypto-linked ETF is a security held through a brokerage account; buying its shares does not give you coins that you can withdraw to a blockchain wallet. Direct crypto exposure has a different account and custody arrangement. First decide which asset you intend to own, then compare providers that offer that specific product.
One login can cover different legal entities
Fidelity explicitly distinguishes Fidelity Crypto from Fidelity Brokerage Services. Webull identifies Webull Pay LLC as the crypto provider. The convenience of a single interface should not be mistaken for identical account terms. Read the agreement for each service you enable. Fidelity account explanation; Webull crypto service.
Compare the complete transaction
For a stock, investigate commissions, applicable fees, spreads and account charges. For crypto, investigate the quoted price, transaction charge, spread and any withdrawal or network costs. A provider may price differently by route, asset or account. eToro’s US fee page and Robinhood’s crypto tiers illustrate why a single “free trading” label is not enough.
Can you transfer the asset?
Do not assume you can withdraw every supported coin. Check the exact asset and network, transfer eligibility, minimums, holds and destination requirements. A balance on a trading screen is not proof that external wallet transfers are enabled. If self-custody matters to your decision, verify those details before funding.
Which protections apply?
Do not assume securities-account protections extend to crypto balances or protect you from market losses. The relevant entity, asset and custody agreement matter. Read the provider’s disclosures and ask it to explain any protection you cannot identify; a brand name alone is not an answer. This guide does not determine the legal coverage of an individual account.
Use a like-for-like checklist
- Am I buying a security or direct crypto?
- Who holds the asset and under which agreement?
- What is the total cost to enter, exit and withdraw?
- Can I transfer it, and what restrictions apply?
- What happens if I need records or customer support?
Compare the five platforms after answering those questions. A Bitcoin chart can help analyze a market, but it cannot resolve account eligibility or custody terms.
