10 EMA vs. 20 EMA: What a Crossover Tells You
What does it mean when the 10 EMA crosses above the 20 EMA? It means the faster exponential average has moved above the slower one on that timeframe; it does not, by itself, establish the full IsItBullish bullish alignment.

Alignment and crossover are different
Alignment describes where the two averages are now. A crossover describes a change in their order between observations. If 10 EMA has stayed above 20 EMA for several bars, the alignment is still positive even though there was no new crossover today. An EMA gives greater weight to recent closes; shorter periods react faster. Fidelity explains EMA calculation and behavior.
Check price against the 50 EMA too
Our rule has two conditions: 10 EMA above 20 EMA and price above 50 EMA. A crossover beneath the 50 EMA can satisfy the first condition while failing the second. On IsItBullish, that mixed reading is neutral / transition. Do not substitute the TradingView gauge’s label for these comparisons.
A hypothetical bullish example
At a completed daily candle, suppose 10 EMA is 102, 20 EMA is 100, 50 EMA is 98 and the close is 104. Both comparisons pass. If the next close is 97 while 10 EMA remains above 20 EMA, the reading becomes mixed under this method. These invented values demonstrate the rule; they do not represent a backtest or a profitability claim.
Why a crossover can fail
In a narrow range, small price changes can repeatedly switch the averages’ order. A gap or reversal can also undo the alignment after a bar closes. Waiting for a completed candle avoids interpreting an unfinished crossover as final, but does not eliminate false signals or losses.
A repeatable check
- Confirm ticker, exchange and timeframe.
- Inspect a completed candle and its EMA values.
- Compare 10 with 20, then close with 50.
- Record the reading without turning it into a guaranteed forecast.
For the other half of the rule, read price versus the 50 EMA. For misleading crossings, read false EMA signals in sideways markets.
